- Sendak, Maurice; Where the Wild Things Are, One of the best kids books ever - a beautiful story of a naughty boy and his imaginary world.
- Serfoz, Mary; Plumply Dumply Pumpkin, A great harvest or Halloween tale about a tiger and his plans for his perfect pumpkin.
- Seuss, Dr.; Green Eggs and Ham, Classic story of Sam-I-am and the reluctant eater. Like many other Seuss books, this one is a little long for children with short attention spans.
- Seuss, Dr.; The Foot Book, A fun, Seussy rhyme, but shorter than others, a great read-aloud, encourages independent reading.

- Sheppard, Jeff; Splash, Splash, Excellent story of animals falling into water and making animal sounds.
- Slobodkina, Esphyr; Caps for Sale, Fun, classic tale of a cap peddler and some meddlesome monkeys.
- Smee, Nicola; Clip-Clop, Farm animals take turns riding the obliging horse in this simple but engaging story.
- Stevenson, Robert Louis; The Moon, Robert Louis Stevenson's classic poem is beautifully illustrated into this sweet bedtime book.

- Thomas, Shelley Moore; Get Well, Good Knight, A knight takes care of his dragon friends when they have a cold.

- Tomkins, Jasper; Nimby, By being true to himself, Nimby finds his place in this world. A simple story with complex themes, a favorite of mine.
- Waddell, Martin; Owl Babies, A sweet story about baby owls waiting for mom to come home - kids love this one.
- Walton, Rick; Mrs. McMurphy's Pumpkin, My new favorite Halloween story, just a little scary, but Mrs. McMurphy outwits the bad pumpkin in the end.
- Weeks, Sarah; If I Were a Lion, Fun, rhyme of a child defending herself against the accusation of "being wild" - terrific art.
- Wells, Rosemary; Max Cleans Up, Max is so messy his sister Ruby always has to clean him up. One in a series about messy Max and precocious Ruby.
- Wood, Audrey and Don; King Bidgood's in the Bathtub Another winner from Wood and Wood. Lovely pictures, fun rhyme, fun story of a king who won't get out of the bath.
- Wood, Audrey and Don; Piggies, A cute story about fingers with AMAZING illustrations, short and sweet.
- Wood, Audrey and Don; The Napping House, Fun "House that Jack Built"-like rhyme with terrific pictures.
- Yolen, Jane; How Do Dinosaurs Eat their Food?, Companion to Yolen's other dinosaur book, How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?, this book tells how dinosaurs act at the table. A real winner.
- Yolen, Jane (ed.); Here's a Little Poem, Collection of great kids poems with wonderful accompanying illustrations.
- Young, Ed; Seven Blind Mice, Seven blind mice try to guess what is by their pond, an ingenious metaphor, but kids will still like the guessing.
