Local librarian wakeboards the Columbia

The Columbia River runs to the west of Stevens County, forming its border with Ferry County, WA. Here, the Columbia is also known as Lake Roosevelt, because of the placid waters that have formed upriver of the Grand Coulee Dam. It is the largest river (in terms of volume) flowing into the Pacific Ocean from the Western Hemisphere, and is the second largest by volume in North America behind the Mississippi. It is the largest hydroelectric power producing river in North America. Because of its large water volume, it has the nickname 'the Mighty Columbia.' The river was named after Capt. Robert Gray's ship Columbia Rediviva, the first to travel up the river.
