[edit] What is Summer Reading?

Summer reading is a program in two parts: first, every summer, the library offers prizes to its patrons for reading books. Secondly, in the summer the library hosts special events for all ages. The goal is to promote reading and encourage people to enjoy their library!

[edit] Why Summer Reading?

Did you know that students can lose as much as 4 months of academic progress in a single summer? Over the years, summer reading loss adds up. Students who do not read during the summers can end up as much as two years behind their target reading level by the time they reach middle school.

Summer reading loss is a problem, but the solution is simple. Studies suggest that students who read as few as 6 books or 20 minutes over the summer maintain their reading skills. And students who read 10 to 20 books during the summer not only maintain their skills, but often make reading gains.

This is why the Stevens County Rural Library District hosts summer reading programs to encourage students (and grown ups) to keep reading. Every summer, take time to read.
