[edit] About Onion Creek School
[edit] Onion Creek School is a small, K-8 public school located in rural eastern Washington. All kids are welcome here.
[edit] Lunch at Onion Creek School
At Onion Creek School we are very lucky to have delicious vegetarian choices (with lots of fruits and veggies!) In our lunch program most of the food is really good, but if you do not like the main course, then you can order a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a cheese sandwich. Everybody loves the lunches that our cook, Linda, serves. Vegetable choices include: carrots, salad, cucumbers, celery, broccoli and tomatoes. Fruit choices include: canned apricots, pears and peaches, fresh apples, bananas and dried blueberries and raisins. You can choose either chocolate or white milk. For example at lunch today we made our own fajitas. I had a tortilla with cheese, olives and beans. I did not have chicken because I am vegetarian. I also had rice and beans, celery, broccoli and carrots, canned peaches and fresh apples. It was a really good lunch. While we are getting lunch, our cook, Linda, watches to make sure we get the right amount of fruit and veggies. She wants us to be happy and healthy.
[edit] PE at Onion Creek School
Onion Creek School is so amazing! Our school has no gym, and yet we have outstanding Health and Fitness classes. In the spring and fall, the teachers teach us sports like baseball and soccer, or help us practice our step-aerobics or yoga skills. My absolute favorite unit is volleyball. I love the way the ball floats over the net with a simple nudge. In the winter we get our exercise by playing in the snow. I love the feeling I get when the first snow falls and I know that the cross-country skies are freshly waxed and ready to glide through the snow. When the snow gets deep enough we all go on long hikes wearing our snowshoes. Sometimes when we’re on our hikes, we see lots of wildlife; one time I even saw a moose running through the woods. Even though we have no gym at our school, we still do a great job staying healthy all year round.
[edit] Art at Onion Creek School
Onion Creek School’s art program is really cool! We learn lots of different kinds of art from Liam, our amazing art teacher. We draw with pastels and pencils, we paint, and we sculpt with clay. In the past we have created papier-mâché masks, stained glass, tessellations, still-life drawings, cartoons, block prints and more.
Right now we are working on pencil drawings. We already did dragonflies and butterflies with oil pastels. We also made frames for our work with glue and tin foil. Everybody works hard at art, but we still find time to laugh. We all have a great time while we are learning. What I really like is that after you are finished with your picture, it is always better than you thought it was going to be!
There are so many colors to art. There are blues, pinks, yellows and lots of other colors. Everyone has a different perspective of colors. Someone may think a color is red and someone else may think it is pink. This is just one of the things we have learned from our great teachers.
Art is always fun. Try doing art projects at home. One easy project is a collage. You just get an old magazine and cut out pictures you like. Then you glue all the pictures onto a piece of cardboard. It does not matter if some pictures cover the others. Art is really fun!
“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” -Scott Adams
[edit] School Math
At Onion Creek School, many subjects are taught. My favorite subject in school is mathematics. Math is really educational and it helps your mind study all the mathematical problems you encounter in your daily life. Math may be important for many things you do. If you’re building a house for example, you may need to calculate how long will the house be? What is the depth of the rectangular cube? What will be the width be? Once these questions are answered, you’ll then know what materials you will need to buy. Or if you are playing sports, you may want to calculate the area of the soccer field or the length of the game. You’ll never know when you’ll need math to fix a problem that you have. Think of math as a friend and “play” with it a little until you get the hang of it!
[edit] Recess
Our school is very lucky because we get some thing that other schools don’t get, and that is RECESS! We get recess because we need the exercise to refresh our minds and bodies so we can learn better. We have recess three times a day, in the morning and after lunch and in the afternoon. At recess we get to play a lot of games. One of our favorite is Blob Tag. In this game, if you get tagged you link hands with your tagger and try to tag other kids. Another favorite is Capture the Flag. The name pretty much speaks for itself, because in this game each team tries to capture the other team’s flag. When we arrive at school we go outside for Fitness Fun. During Fitness Fun we play tags to get all of our energy out and get ready to start the school day.
[edit] How Did Onion Creek Get Its Name?
Have you ever wondered how Onion Creek got its name? If so you are not alone. Many people have pondered this same question over the years. There are several possible explanations.
Theory 1: One of my favorite theories is Onion Jack. Onion Jack, or Jack Reynolds, homesteaded in the late 1800’s. He lived at the mouth of Onion Creek and grew onions and other produce for the people in Northport. He was a mountain man and loved wild onions. Because he ate them all the time, he reeked of onion. Winifred Lotze, granddaughter of a local homesteader once confirmed that Onion Creek got its name from “Onion Creek” Jack who raised onions1.
Theory 2: Another theory is that Onion Creek was named for the abundance of wild onions growing on the creek banks.
Theory 3: The last theory is that Onion Creek got its name because the mouth of the creek looks like an onion, stem and all.
Maybe one of these is correct, maybe all of them are. You can choose whichever answer suits you best.
